Background

(Let’s talk about me.)

One of the things I like about voice acting and audio production is that it’s all about the performance. Can you bring the magic? That’s the only question. My background, education, looks, age — none of that matters.

But for those who are curious: I was born in Kansas and raised in Missouri. From there I picked up a bit of “plains drawl,” compared to people here in Ohio. That drawl comes mostly from my late mother, whose imprint is everywhere in the Colors Audio facility. The “stand quilts” (our invention) on the copy stands, the antique radio, and many more items here remind me of her every day.

My father had a huge impact on my actual career: He was a newsman on radio and TV when my sisters and I were young. So as a boy I spent a fair amount of time in radio stations, where got a decent collection of free 45’s. Sweet.

At age 11 I was given a portable cassette recorder that opened the door to a lifetime of playing with sound.

At 16 I heard that a guy my age had been hired as a DJ at the cool Top 40 radio station, and decided that I wanted in on that action.

I spent 13 years on the air and producing commercials before establishing Colors Audio.

You may want to know about my training for voice acting. It spans everything from courses on cassette (!) to a (stage) acting class, work with a couple of the big names in the voiceover industry, and private instruction.

Here would be a good place to thank all the clients, mentors, teachers, my wife and family, friends, competitors, and even students who’ve had such a huge impact on my ability to do this stuff.

But again, the whole point is, how much of that training and experience can I bring to bear on your script?

I’m driven by a desire to get things right, to do the best we can do, every time at bat. My favorite word is “create.”

Let’s do some of that, because I have cats to feed.

How Can I Help, as a Professional Voice Actor?

With performances for Commercials, eLearning, Documentary/In-show, Program Hosting, Explainer, Awards, and other kinds of voiceover.

Candidly I’m probably not your guy for character/animation voice acting work, though I have done that a few times.  Narrating audiobooks might be a stretch, though our recording services for audiobooks are well-respected.

Let’s give it a try!  In all my years of doing this, no one has ever paid for something they didn’t like or couldn’t use.  So there’s no risk, except maybe a little time.  I’d love to work with you!

Yes, bring the magic.
